J. PLASCENCIA became interested in painting murals following
a high school course in Mexican-American history. This
combination of Mexican/Chicano History and Art led him
to create several noteworthy murals and paintings featuring
both historical and c9ntemporary fig- ures from the Mexican
and Chicano experience. His most popular mural "460
Years of Chicano History" hangs at the Victor Clothing
Company in downtown Los Angeles. The mural captures the
evolution of Mexicano and Chicano history from the founding
of Tenochitlan to the Chicano Move- ment period. It became
so popular that it has been used for the cover of a textbook,
greeting cards and is widely distributed as a poster.
Other posterworks include "The Mexican Revolution
of 1910" and his most recent "Latinos in Hollywood".
Born in Cuidad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, Plascencia's
family moved to California where he attended Alisal High
School in Salinas, California. He also attended San Jose
State and Cal State Northridge majoring in Chicano Studies
and Art. He pres- ently lives in EI Paso, Texas where
he works on developing a variety of creative projects
